New Delhi: Government selected 20 cities out of 97 under SMART CITIES MISSION.

NEW DELHI: Urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday announced the first list of 20 cities to be developed as Smart Cities from 4 capitals,12 states.These 20 cities are short-listed out of 98 cities under SMART CITIES MISSION. Bhubaneshwar ,Pune ,Jaipur stand in first 3 positions.Surprisingly, biggest state Uttar pradesh and newest state Telangana have no cities selected under this scheme.


SMART CITY??
  A 'smart city' is an urban region that is highly advanced in terms of overall infrastructure, sustainable real estate, communications and market viability. It is a city where information technology is the principal infrastructure and the basis for providing essential services to residents. There are many technological platforms involved, including but not limited to automated sensor networks and data centres.

SMART CITY MISSION??
 It is started by Narendra modi  with motive to put all the features of a smart city into the selected urban areas with population as a criteria for selection.Under this mission 98 cities and towns that five years down will graduate into smart cities.Of them 24 are capital cities, another 24 are business and industrial centres, 18 are culture and tourism influenced areas, five are port cities and three are education and health care hubs.

Speaking on this Venkaiah Naidu said "The states selected cities and sent us a list of 98 names. There was a competition among these names and 20 cities have been selected and a bottom up approach has been the key planning principle under Smart City Mission.The Smart City Challenge Competition was as rigorous and demanding as the civil services competition conducted"

  • There are four capitals in the top 20 - Bhubaneshwar, Jaipur, Chennai and Bhopal.


  • And there is only 1 city with a 50 lakh plus population - Chennai.

  • Madhya Pradesh has the most, three cities in the top 20 
  •  Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu have two each.


  • Punjab, Delhi, Assam, Kerala and Odisha have one each.
  •  Biggest state Uttar Pradesh has none in the top 20, neither has India's newest state Telangana.

Another 40 smart cities each will be announced in the next two years, Mr Naidu said.
