IPS Officer Aparna Kumar From Lucknow, Scales The Tallest Peak In Antarctica!

About Aparna Kumar:


Aparna who is posted as Deputy Inspector General (DIG, Telecom) in Lucknow is a 2002 batch officer of the Uttar Pradesh cadre and had left for the expedition on January five along with a 10-member team of international mountaineers. She braved winds blowing at the speed of 100 kph, survived sub-zero temperatures and finally hoisted the Indian tricolor atop Mount Vinson Massif.

The young IPS officer received her formal training at Manali’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports in October 2013 following which she undertook the advanced course in July 2014.

This isn’t the first peak that the young DIG who is scheduled to return to India on February 5 has conquered. Earlier, Aparna Kumar has successfully scaled Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa, Mount Elbrus in Russia, Carstensz Pyramid, the highest peak in Australia and Oceania region and Mount Aconcagua in South America.

With her Mount Vinson Massif expedition, Aparna Kumar has become the first lady IPS officer to have scaled the highest peak in Antartica and has scratched five of the seven most important summits in the world. She has now set sights of Everest (April-May) and Alaska’s Mount McKinley (July-August) after which she joins the elite list of mountaineers to have conquered all the seven major summits in the world.

Aparna Kumar’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. In March last year, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav conferred the Rani Lakshmi Bai Puraskar. And on January 25 this year, on the eve of India’s 67th Republic Day, Aparna was also awarded the special DGP commendation.
