A Russian woman is in a critical condition after a man threw acid at her in Varanasi. The 23-year-old woman reportedly suffered severe burn injuries on her face and shoulders in the acid attack.
Darya Yurieva, 23, who is from Moscow, had been in India for about four months. The police say the man threw a bottle of acid on the woman after an argument. The two, the police said, had recently travelled together to Ladakh and were believed to be involved.
The incident occurred in Nand Nagar colony, where the woman was living as a paying guest in a house for past few months, Mr. Kulhary said.
During her stay at the house, she came close to the landlord’s son Siddharth, who is a student of music at Banaras Hindu University, he said.
“He was unhappy over the decision of the woman to return to Russia. They had a quarrel over the issue after which Siddharth threw acid on her body,” said Mr. Kulhary.
Mr. Siddharth’s mother heard the woman’s cries and rushed her to the hospital.
Pankaj Srivastav, uncle of suspect Siddharth Srivastav said that he heard commotion around 5 am. They found Darya suffering in pain and they rushed her to BHU hospital. BHU doctors have confirmed her chemical burns. Because of the acid, some part of her face and right shoulder has suffered injuries.

According to the local police, Siddharth and Darya were in a live-in relationship. SSP Akash Kulhir, Darya was planning on returning home. The decision led to some argument between the two and is probably the reason wy Siddharth might have attacked her.
Police also said that Siddharth bought acid 2 or 3 days ago. They also suspect that Siddharth is mentally unstable. Police are currently investigating the matter and questioning the family members of the suspect.
For a nation seeking to boost its tourism, such attacks against women do it no favours. In this case there are questions to be answered regarding how the assailant managed to get such a large quantity of acid, despite restrictions supposedly being in place.
