We live in the age of social media, where everything is a click away, where one page connects thousands. In this scenario, one man decides to use the network for the benefit of his people

Prasanth Nair, district collector, Kozhikode, sets an example of how, with efficient use of the social Media, it is possible to attain the goals of the democratic set up.

Three months into his service as Kozhikode district collector, N Prasanth has come up with an innovative method to identify an important problem that of hunger.

"Operation Sulaimani" is an initiative by the district administration in collaboration with the state Hotel and Restaurants Association and a number of non-governmental organisations, to eliminate hunger by providing food free of cost to the needy.

Food coupons will be distributed through taluk and village offices using which people in need can avail the service at select hotels across the city. The collector pointed out that distributing the coupons through village offices will help keep alcoholics at bay and solve the problem of identifying the needy.

According to the Collector, with the implementation of the new project, they plan to avoid food wastage in the district.

“It is found that  here is a practice of wasting food in connection with the free food distribution campaigns of certain organisations. A big share of food arranged for such campaigns is often found dumped along with other waste materials. Another sad thing is that the eligible persons often do not get the benefit of this scheme as many who can afford to buy food grab these free packs,’’ he said.

“We will note down the name and address of the people who buys the coupon. We will take necessary steps to avoid the people  who regularly come for free food even though they have  proper income as we are targeting the poor people in the district,” he said

More than 25 hotels in the city have come forward to join the project in the initial phase. "The coupon is like prepaid card which can be presented at the hotel counter before the meal. The fund for the project will be collected from the public. We will keep donation boxes at various points and request people to contribute to Sulaimani fund when they pay their bills," the collector said.
