Shiv Sena workers attacks RTI activist With Iron Rod, blacken his face

The activist had used an RTI query to expose illegal construction in a college in Maharashtra's Marathwada region.

Shiv Sena workers on Friday assaulted a Right to Information activist with an iron rod and blackened his face in Latur, Maharashtra. Press Trust of India reported that Mallikarjun Bhaikatti, exposed an illegal construction case through an RTI query and held a press conference on the matter on Friday. The RTI response showed there was about 14,000 sq ft of illegal work in a four-storeyed building and a boys' hostel on Latur-Nanded road. Sena workers assaulted Bhaikatti in front of around 4,000 students at the college where the construction was carried out. He was admitted to hospital.

Shiv Sena activist Abhay Salunke defended the attack on Bhaikatti and called him a blackmailer. Earlier this month, the party's workers threw ink and paint on Sudheendra Kulkarni, chairman of Observer Research Foundation for organising an event to launch a book by former Pakistan foreign minister Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri.
