Shame! Dalit Family was allegedly Naked and Stripped by UP Police when they Filed Complaint

A video of Dalit man and his wife stripping themselves naked by the police in Greater Noida in Gautam Buddh Nagar has created a storm in the social media. But the authorities are yet to act.

According to The Hindu, Sunil Gautam and his wife were stripped naked publicly by the Dankaur police after they insisted on filing a police complaint. They were later arrested and locked up in jail.

Media reports on Friday said that a Dalit couple resorted to nude protest after the Greater Noida Police failed to register an FIR for an alleged robbery despite their repeated requests.

One report claimed that Sunil Gautam, a Dalit, approached the Dankaur Police Station along with his wife and a baby yesterday to file a case of robbery after he was robbed by a few muggers on Wednesday night near Atta in Greater Noida.

It was alleged that the policemen paid no heed to their request and refused to register a case in this regard after which the Dalit couple staged a protest in front of the police station and demanded swift action.

"They were badly beater and their clothe got torn in the police beating. After which Sunil Gautam further tore off his clothes and his wife in protest," said Aslam Khan a CPI (ML) leader who talked to several eye witnesses.

Aslam Khan who was part of a fact finding team to find out the details of the case, termed it a case of "dalit atrocity".

"It is a dalit atrocity. Police forced them to sit on dharna. In protest they did it. The beating was started by police first if you would notice the video," he said.

"If you would see the video closely you would notice that Police started beating without any provocation," he added.

Khan argued that Sunil Gautam is a politically active person in the area. " It is only in very difficult circumstances that one is forced to do such things. Instead of handling the situation better, police just forced him to protest," he added.

"There is no woman constables there. A police man is dragging one of the woman by her leg. What will you call this," he added.

The villagers claim that the Dankaur Police Station's Station House Officer (SHO) refused to acknowledge the complaint from the couple and misbehaved with them and tore off their clothes leaving them naked.

The police, however, denied the allegations completely, saying the couple stripped themselves to put pressure on the policemen.

The police later arrested at least five people, including three women under IPC Sections 307, 232, 323, 147, 148, 353, 294, 394 after the incident.

Dismissing the allegations that the police paraded the family nude, Yadav said, "We made all efforts to prevent them from doing this and even tried to cover them with their clothes. However, by the time women police officers managed to reach the spot they had already created a scene".

While the police tried to pacify the family, some passerbys filmed them and posted the video on social networking sites, which later went viral.

As the news spread, senior police officials reached the spot along with women police force and the family was taken away.
