150 Girls Lathi Charged when they protested aganist Lack of Teachers in their Schools

Students of a government senior secondary school at Choru village held a press conference on Wednesday against the alleged atrocities by Aligarh police station team on September 29, while they were agitating against lack of teachers in their school.

“The policemen started beating us with lathis. They groped, dragged us by our hair and foul mouthed us because we were demanding our basic right i.e. a teacher to teach,” said Kumari Gaura Meena, a Class 10 student of the school. The students demanded a criminal case against the police team for the alleged lathi charge.

Girls Lathi Charged

“There are no teachers for English, Geography and Social Sciences in our school for the past three months and we were facing difficulty to manage the syllabus. We started an agitation in the morning when policemen arrived at the spot and started beating us mercilessly with lathis.

Eight girls were seriously injured and hospitalized when police lathi charged a group of 150 girls on 29th September in Chauru (Aligarh), Tonk district, Rajasthan. It is alleged that the policemen were drunk when they reached the site. Many students jumped off from the nearby bridge to save themselves from the brutal attack.

This act of brutality comes at a time when the state should be actively supporting the educational needs of the students by appointing sufficient teachers and providing quality education.

A delegation of activists went to meet the DGP who admitted that the police operation was wrong and also spoke of taking action. Activists have made the following demands:

1.An FIR be immediately registered against the policemen who carried out the operation.

2.The girls who have been seriously injured must get free medical care and compensation.

3.The District Collector and the District Education Officer must meet the girls in the hospital and those in the school in order to help stabilise the situation, help build trust, and alleviate the legitimate concerns of the girls.

4.The criteria and standards laid down for education must be immediately met including sanctioning adequate teachers and providing adequate infrastructure.

“It has been over 10 days since the incident and not a single official statement addressing the issue has been made by the administration or the state government,” says Radhika Ganesh, member of Shiksha Ka Sawaal Abhiyan.
